Black Keys, Kasey Keller, Edgar Martinez help open Microsoft store at University Village

Voting with your feet in the Apple versus Microsoft war will be as easy as walking across a University Village parking lot starting this Thursday. The University District will be the home to Seattle’s first Microsoft store when the doors open at 9:30 a.m. across the parking lot from the Apple store.

Microsoft is going to great lengths to make sure you notice they’re there too. They started getting some buzz going by setting up a Kinect shack where you can practice your controller free Xbox 360 moves. Xbox is likely to play a big role in the store’s appeal with a panoramic video wall around the entire store. Part of the grand opening on Thursday includes one-on-one Kinect play with a couple of Seattle sports heroes, Sounders goalkeeper Kasey Keller and retired Mariner legend Edgar Martinez.

This Friday, you’ll also be able to watch and listen to The Black Keys and OneRepublic. The performance is free but you’ll need to pick up advanced tickets at the store on Thursday and Friday.

Microsoft says the U-Village shop is their 12th store in the world and they’re looking foward to being in the U-District. “The local community has been wonderful to work with, said Microsoft Spokesperson Eileen Chang.

After the grand opening weekend it should be interesting to see if Microsoft can emulate, build-on or steal some of the success from their competitors from across the parking lot.
