University Apartments on schedule to open next summer

October 28th, 2010 by master

We’ve learned a development in the U-District that will house people transitioning out of homelessness is on target to open in the summer of 2011.  University Apartments is currently under construction in the 4700 block of 12th Ave NE.   The site, which was purchased by the Low Income Housing Institute when plans for a hotel fell through, will feature 62 units of permanent affordable housing for homeless individuals, couples, and veterans.

Sharon Lee, executive director of the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI), told us a few months ago that residents will be screened carefully.  There will also be an on-site resident manager and Sound Mental Health will provide residents with everything from job training to counseling.

LIHI is proposing a new low income facility in Ballard which would also include an “urban rest stop” for the homeless to shower and wash their clothes.  The rest stop idea has caused a huge controversy in Ballard.  The University Apartments will not have a rest stop.
