Husky Football, NE 45th Street Viaduct work could cause traffic tie-ups

October 12th, 2011 by master

With Husky Football on Saturday and SDOT work on Sunday, U-District drivers should plan ahead if they want to avoid sitting in traffic this weekend.

UW Husky Marching Band plays Greek Row

The first event to watch out for starts at  8:45 p.m. this Friday when the UW Husky Marching Band will march from campus through Greek Row. They’ll cross NE 45th Street to head north along 21st Avenue NE, turn west on NE 47th Street, south on 17th Avenue NE and then cross NE 45th Street again to get back to campus. Exect the roads around the route to be closed from 8:45 p.m. to 10 p.m.

UW Husky Football

On Saturday, October 15 some 70,000 UW Football fans will make their way in and out of Husky Stadium to watch the Huskies’ first Pac-12 conference game of the season against the Colorado Buffaloes. The game starts at 12:30 and will run to about 3:30 or 4 p.m.. Expect heavy traffic near the stadium as the crowd leaves. While it’s not likely to add to any traffic woes on game day, WSDOT is also planning to close the SR 520 bridge from 8 p.m. Saturday, until 5 a.m. Monday. SR 520 will still be open between Montlake Boulevard and I-5.

NE 45th Street Viaduct lane closures on Sunday

Sunday drivers may want to avoid NE 45th Street between the UW campus and U-Village during the day. SDOT plans to install expansion joints on the NE 45th Street Viaduct from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Work crews will close two of the bridge’s three lanes and will alternate both directions of traffic in the remaining lane. Needless to say it could be slow going.

Temporary lane closure on NE 45th Viaduct this week

October 11th, 2010 by master

SDOT will install a permanent railing on the NE 45th Street Viaduct this week.  On Tuesday and Wednesday, crews will work on the south side of the viaduct, which shouldn’t impact traffic.  But on Thursday and Friday, crews will switch to the north side of the viaduct and close one northbound (uphill) lane.  One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained during this work.

The NE 45th Street Viaduct reopened to traffic on September 10 after a big renovation.  Crews will be completing final wrap-up work on and around the structure until the end of this month.

NE 45th Viaduct reopens with ribbon cutting

September 10th, 2010 by master

Almost 3 months after the NE 45th Street Viaduct was closed for a major overhaul, the road reopened this morning to vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic.  Representatives from SDOT, the University Chamber of Commerce, and the University of Washington were on hand for a ribbon cutting to mark the end of construction.

“Being under budget and a little ahead of schedule will hopefully boost the confidence in which the citizens have in the city,” said SDOT Director Peter Hahn.

The Husky Helmet Car had the honor of being the first vehicle to cross the improved viaduct.  SDOT wanted to wrap the project up before the first home football game at Husky Stadium tomorrow.

On schedule: NE 45th Viaduct update

July 29th, 2010 by master

Just a few days after a big rig ended up lost while trying to navigate the NE 45th Street Viaduct detour, we’re getting an update from SDOT on the project.  They tell us the walls of the new structure are more than 30 percent complete, and the project is still on schedule to reopen to all traffic, pedestrians and bicycles by September 10.

Stolen detour signs cause confusion

July 17th, 2010 by master

Drivers were already having a tough time getting around the NE 45th Street Viaduct closure.  Now, they’re running into a new problem.  Detour signs for the project are being stolen on a regular basis.  Many signs and traffic cones have been recovered along Greek Row and alleyways north of 45th Street.

“The contractor is doing their best to replace missing signs in a timely manner, but the missing signs have impacted the traveling public’s ability to navigate the signed detour route,” said Maribel Cruz, outreach coordinator for the viaduct project. She also said UW Police have stepped up patrols around the area. Reporter Nick Visser has more in The Daily.

New closures involving NE 45th Street Viaduct

July 7th, 2010 by master

Effective immediately until early August, SDOT has closed the connections of 21st and 22nd Avenues NE to NE 45th Street.  This is so crews can finish the installation of a combined sewer overflow system. Local access only from other connecting streets will be allowed along 21st and 22nd Avenues NE during this time.

Meanwhile, demolition of the west approach to the NE 45th Street Viaduct is now complete and construction of the footings to support the outer walls of the future structure is underway.  The viaduct remains closed until September 10 to all vehicles, bikes, and pedestrians.  Learn more about the project here.

NE 45th Viaduct demolition photos

June 29th, 2010 by master

We’re two weeks into the closure of the NE 45th Street Viaduct and construction crews appear to be making a good deal of progress.  These demolition photos from SDOT show exactly what was under the street surface we’ve been driving on– wood that isn’t nearly as sturdy as it used to be.  Built in the late 1930’s, the viaduct is one of the City’s last timber-supported structures.

The west approach to the viaduct is being replaced, which will keep the road completely closed until September 10.  You can track the project here.
